Trains, planes and automobiles...

First of all thank you all for your messages of support.  It’s been an incredibly busy week and your emails and letters have given me a shot of energy to get me through it all!  I’ve got a big brief - leading on transport business in the House of Commons, and being responsible for regional and city networks (including Crossrail), as well as environmental impact, climate change and integration with European transport networks – so there’s a lot to learn.  But I’ve had to hit the ground running.

I’ve already been up to Blackpool to announce £100 million of funding to upgrade the tramway there, and been to Luxembourg to attend a European Council Transport meeting of almost 30 Transport Ministers from across the European Union (more details about both here).

Of course, no Transport Minister’s first week in office would be complete without a major tube strike to enflame passions and generate hundreds of emails, facebook messages and twitter messages etc.

Ultimately this is a matter for London Underground, Transport for London and the Mayor to resolve with the RMT – so it’s not something I could become directly involved in.

Summer fun in Tooting

Tomorrow is the Balham and Tooting Community Association Fun Day at Gatton School and St Augustine’s Church on Broadwater Road (12pm-5pm)

It’s one of my highlights of the summer in Tooting, and I’m really looking forward to seeing old faces and spending some time with my family.

The day includes rides, sports and craft  workshops, international food and  salad bars, freshly made smoothies, a clown and  storyteller, free health checks from  NHS Wandsworth,  an amazing arts workshop where you can create hats  and costumes from ‘trash’ and join the 'Trashcatchers  Parade', and there will be musical entertainment from the excellent ‘Great Gustos’ community choir.

There’ll also be the annual ‘ambulance pull’ – which will see the great and good of Tooting heave an ambulance around to raise money for St George’s Hospital.  Last year’s ‘pull’ raise £3511 for the hospital and helped pay for a new ultrasound machine in the paediatrics unit.  A truly worthy cause.  Read more here.
