New Prime Minister
Monday, 16 July 2007 16:40
On Monday I met with the Chief Executive of St George's Hospital, David Astley, to discuss the St George's staff social club.

I also had a meeting with representatives from the Sri Lanka Islamic Forum UK to discuss concerns they had about the plight of Sri Lankan Muslims in Sri Lanka. I have agreed to take up these matters with the relevant Ministers and authorities.

In the afternoon I met the Public Health Minister, Caroline Flint MP, to discuss the smoking ban which came into force on the 1st of July. You can see the photograph of Caroline and I by clicking here.

In the afternoon I hosted the All Party Parliamentary Group Citizens Advice Summer reception. The keynote speaker was the Rt Hon Jack Straw MP. We also announced the Inaugural Citizens Advice Parliamentarian of the Year award. The winner was the Rt Hon John McFall MP, who is Chairman of the Treasury Select Committee.

On Wednesday, Tony Blair took his last Prime Ministers Questions. It was a pretty emotional affair with the entire chamber of the House of Commons giving him a standing ovation at the end of Prime Minister Questions. Immediately following the Prime Minister Questions, Tony Blair went to Buckingham Palace to meet with the Queen and officially resigned as the Prime Minister. Gordon Brown was then asked by the Queen to form a new Government and he stepped into the role of Britain's new Prime Minister.

On Thursday I held the first ever Veterans Day event in Tooting. The event was at the Ravenstone School in Balham on the 28th of June. The event was attended by 3 local schools. You can see a photograph of the event by clicking here.

In the evening I attended the Annual General Meeting of the Age Activity Centre. The Centre continues to go from strength to strength as a luncheon club, community centre, and much more. Susan Fleming, who is a local sickle cell sufferer made an inspiring speech.

On Friday I attended the launch of Partners Outreach for Ethnic Minorities (POEM). After Gordon Brown in 2005 proposed an outreach initiative to increase employment, POEM was founded. It aims to "support...non-working partners of low-income families in groups who face particular barriers to employment, and are based in areas of disadvantage and high ethnic minority population."
