Dear friend, Thanks v. much I am typing out this quick e-news as I leave the office to go to a dinner which Tooting’s Al-Risalah Trust have very kindly organised to celebrate my recent promotion. I have just been shown the list of those attending, and can see a cross-section of our local community; churches, temples, school teachers, hospital staff, community groups – represented. I am concerned whether or not we will all fit into the local restaurant where this is being held! Can I once again thank everyone who has sent me some really kind messages over the last 7 weeks. I am very lucky and grateful to live in such a wonderful community. Friendly neighbours... Over the last couple of days I have spent more time than usual in the company of my good friend and neighbouring MP Martin Linton. Last night Martin and I hosted a reception for all the police Safer Neighbourhood Teams from Tooting and Battersea (these are the local ‘bobbies on the beat’ that have been brought back over the last three years). This was our chance to say thank you to them for the hard work they do actually walking the streets, getting to know local residents and helping to keep us safe. They have played a huge role in turning our police force into a police service. This morning the both of us were on Nightingale Lane helping local residents lobby Wandsworth Council to get decent traffic calming measures on that very busy road. More than 850 locals have signed a petition, and many residents will be going to the Full Council meeting tonight when it is handed in formally Rail Miles I have a hectic couple of days ahead. I’m taking the last train tonight to Manchester. I shall be in Manchester and Liverpool on Ministerial business tomorrow morning before going to Cardiff for a Cabinet meeting, after which I return to Manchester for another event tomorrow night. Finally, I know the school holidays are here, which coincide with parliamentary recess. As you will see from my e-news over the next 12 weeks, the recess is not a 12 week holiday for me! Until next time, Sadiq P.S A Big Thank You to all who attended the various Big Lunches over the weekend. Well done for not being put off by the Council's efforts to make a profit out of community cohesion by charging obscene amounts for the cost of the street parties. I understand the local press may be writing about this… |
