Nightingale residents gathered on Wednesday to demand better road safety measures in their neighbourhood.
They rolled out a 32ft petition containing 856 signatures requesting to make Nightingale Lane safer- an issue they say the council has ignored for 14 years.
The road was the scene of a terrible death last year, when a local mum was mown down by an out-of-control cement mixer.
Carole Jenkinson, headteacher of Broomwood Upper School, said: “It is worrying that children’s lives are being put at risk by careless lorry drivers who ignore the speed bumps, and use the lane as a race track.”
The petition was presented to Councillor Sarah McDermott by The Nightingale Neighbourhood Association (TNNA).
Campaigners other measures to replace the speed bumps, which they say do not stop vehicles racing down the busy B-road.
Demands include a 20mph speed limit, a cycle lane and speed cushions.
TNNA secretary David Hornsby said: “All that we want are modern alternatives to the crumbling 14 year old speed bumps, which to add insult to injury they have even failed to maintain.
“The council should be in no doubt that if they fail to listen once again, we are prepared to mount a campaign of direct action and civil disobedience. This petition is our final olive branch.”
Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting, added: “I have every sympathy with residents of Nightingale Lane, whose lives have been made a misery. Action needs to be taken now.”
The council has been contacted for comment.
