Spice Village has been voted the winner of the Tooting round of the 2009 Tiffin Cup. This is the fourth time local MP, Sadiq Khan, has held the competition to find Tooting’s best restaurant. Record numbers participated in the competition this year.
The national competition, organised by the Tiffin Club, celebrates the ever-expanding wealth of South-Asian cuisine on offer in the UK. Every MP is invited to put forward the best restaurant in their constituency, and a select few of those are short-listed by mystery shopper-style judges. These restaurants are then invited to the House of Commons, to take part in a ‘cook-off’. The winner of this will be awarded 2009’s Tiffin Cup and labelled the best South Asian restaurant in the UK by the Tiffin Club.
Sadiq asked local Tooting residents to send him their nominations for their favourite restaurant. In a fantastic result, Spice Village was voted the best restaurant by Tooting residents. The number of votes received and restaurants who took part was a great testament to the popularity and quality of Tooting’s South Asian restaurants, and the competition was very close.
Sadiq said: “The competition this year has been another great success.
“You can tell by the thousands of votes I’ve received just how important the Tiffin Cup is to local restaurants.
“I am hugely impressed with the level of support shown for Spice Village amongst local residents and the many visitors to Tooting.
“Spice Village sets an important example to Tooting businesses that even in these difficult times, you can continue to succeed and people will continue to eat out as long as the service and food are up to standard. Spice Village had recently invested in a huge refurbishment and this is clearly paying dividends with the business going from strength to strength.
“This is an excellent restaurant and fully deserving of the best restaurant in Tooting title.
“Hundreds of the nominations came from visitors who had come to Tooting specifically for the cuisine served in our restaurants. This goes to show Tooting restaurants really are the best in the UK."
