Tooting MP Sadiq Khan lent his support to local diabetes campaigners on Saturday 30th May, by attending a fundraising event in Tooting Broadway. Collecting over £500 for charity Diabetes
There is a particular risk of Type 2 diabetes in Tooting, but it can be prevented. It is believed that a few simple changes to lifestyle can stop a person from getting Type 2 diabetes.
Sadiq Khan MP said, "Many local residents are affected by diabetes.
"This is a particular problem with the South Asian community.
"GPs and patients need to be aware of specific factors that affect the South Asian community, such as the heavy use of ghee, which is very high in fat, in a South Asian cooking.
"Raising awareness about the importance of a good diet, regular exercise and other factors that can lead to diabetes is also extremely important."
Denise Thiruchelvam, who hosted the event, said “We’re very grateful for Mr Khan’s support, because diabetes is a growing problem in Tooting. Left untreated, diabetes will knock years off your life and lead to serous health conditions– but preventing, diagnosing and treating it is easy.”
There are many places to get information about preventing and diagnosing diabetes. You can find more information online at www.hamptonreed.com/diabetes. Diabetes
