Sadiq Khan MP recently visited one of his local stations – Tooting Broadway Tube station - to inspect track-works and present a team of engineers with a safety award. The beacon award, which recognises safe and responsible working at Tube Lines sites, was presented to a team responsible for upgrading track in the Tooting area. The award was presented in the early hours of Friday 17 April.
Sadiq Khan, MP said:"I congratulate the team at Tooting Broadway on its beacon award and I really appreciate the work which the team has been doing, night in, night out. Their work is never seen by the public but is having a great impact in improving the Underground and benefiting thousands of my constituents."
"The station needs this work and I was pleased to personally thank the crew for finishing ahead of schedule and handing over the well deserved Beacon Award. Improvements on the tracks often go unnoticed. However improved tubes and brighter modern tube stations at Tooting Broadway, Tooting Bec and Balham will soon be seen by all local commuters I hope."
Tooting Broadway tube station is also currently being refurbished to improve the station ambience and its facilities for passengers. As with all station upgrades, safety is top priority and there will be an increase in the amount of CCTV cameras and public help points around the station. Balham Station on the Northern line is also undergoing a refurbishment
Both stations are benefitting from extended engineering hours; the stations will close at 10pm between Sunday to Thursday. This will enable more work to get done as the normal window in which to work in during engineering hours can often be less than four hours. Both stations will be completed by no later than May 2010.
